About DigitalOcean
DigitalOcean Droplets
DigitalOcean sells virtual machines as Droplets: a Regular $5 plan is still 1 vCPU / 1 GB / 25 GB SSD with 1 TB transfer. Premium Intel and AMD Droplets cost more and use NVMe. Billing is hourly up to a monthly cap, which makes short-lived staging cheap.
The product around the VM is the reason many teams stay: a clean API, 1-Click apps, managed databases, Kubernetes with a documented control plane, Spaces object storage, and a large tutorial library. Regions cover North America, Europe, Asia and a few others — not as dense as AWS, denser than a typical EU-only host.
Choose DigitalOcean when developer time matters more than squeezing the last dollar of RAM. Choose a Hetzner or Contabo plan when you want 4–8 GB on a similar budget and can live with a thinner PaaS layer. Watch bandwidth: 1 TB on the $5 droplet is easy to burn on container pulls and backups.
